Start with the problem you need to solve. If your budget uses one currency and YNAB connects to your bank, its native apps and Direct Import may already suit you. Budgero is worth considering when you need several account currencies in one budget, end-to-end encryption, or your own server.

For example, a household earning GBP while paying rent in EUR needs a consistent conversion rule. A traveller who only wants automatic imports from a German bank has a different requirement. Currency support does not establish bank connectivity.

For migration, connect through YNAB’s API or import its export ZIP. Compare account balances and category history before relying on the new budget. Rebuild targets and scheduled transactions, and keep your source export.

Suppose your household plans in euros and keeps a British account for travel. Set EUR as your budget currency and GBP as that account's currency. A £50 transaction stays visible as £50 in the account, while categories and reports use its euro value.

At an illustrative rate of €1.18 per £1, that purchase uses €59 of the category's available money. To record an actual conversion cost of €60, override the transaction's rate to 1.20 so the budget reflects that cost. These rates illustrate the calculation; they are not current exchange-rate quotes.
